Set in the hills east of the Silver Lake Reservoir, the Baxter Residence explores the relationship between landscape, views, and everyday living. The house is organized around a series of outdoor moments, with the street entry acting as the front door, the pool deck functioning as the primary living space, and the surrounding gardens creating more private areas of retreat. The two main volumes shift slightly in response to the sloping site, framing views of the reservoir while sitting comfortably among the area’s notable modernist homes.
A defining element of the project is a sculptural CMU wall that follows the natural topography of the hillside. By subtly rotating each concrete block, the wall creates a soft, feathered pattern that gives new life to an otherwise simple material. The design was developed through close collaboration with the structural engineer, contractor, and masons, using a mix of parametric modeling, physical mockups, and custom tools to make the concept both buildable and cost-effective. The result is a simple construction system transformed into a dynamic architectural feature.
